A fraud ring has managed to siphon money from the credit cards of Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) customers in Bangladesh using a clever scheme. Even though the affected customers did not make any transactions themselves, sums of BDT 50,000 were suddenly transferred from their cards to bKash and Nagad accounts. The fraudsters quickly withdrew the funds from these mobile financial services.

According to sources in the banking sector, the fraud occurred in the last week of August, during which around BDT 2.7 million was stolen from the accounts of 54 SCB customers. In response to the incident, the bank has suspended the transfer of funds from credit cards to bKash and Nagad.

In messages sent to customers, the bank stated that the ‘Add Money’ option in MFS apps has been temporarily disabled for security reasons. Additionally, the matter has been reported to Bangladesh Bank and law enforcement authorities. Bangladesh Bank has already begun an invetigetion.
